Laundromats in Houston and Taylor, Texas, hosted Free Laundry Days for their respective communities in the wake of one of the worst storms to hit the state. These important and selfless acts of charity highlight the giving spirit of the business owners who serve their communities with laundry services. The LaundryCares Foundation, the 501(c)3 charity of the Coin Laundry Association, was proud to lend assistance to each of the store owners at the helm of these events.

Hurricane Harvey left a huge portion of Texas in shambles, causing billions of dollars in damage and displacing thousands from their homes. What’s more, problems with electricity and plumbing caused many of those who were not forced to evacuate to experience issues with trying to clean their garments and linens at home. Part of the LaundryCares Foundation’s mission is to help those in distress procure the means to the basic and essential need of clean clothes through a network of self-service laundries.

Watch this video of the Houston Free Laundry Day:

In Houston, on October 21, 2017, laundry owner Rob Maes held a large Free Laundry Day event at his store, Express Laundry. In addition to offering free use of his washers and dryer, Maes and the LaundryCares Foundation provided engaging crafts and books for the customers’ children to help promote early childhood literacy, giveaways to registered guests, and a free barbecue lunch for all in attendance. This was an extremely worthwhile afternoon, as many families were positively affected. Volunteers from the area and LaundryCares – as well as from local distributors and industry manufacturers – all pitched in for this amazing cause. All in all, approximately 10,700 pounds of laundry was washed from 90 families (more than 220 people).

A few days prior, Nichol Weaver of Skyline Laundry in Taylor, Texas, also held a successful Free Laundry Day, providing similar reading resources and activities for the kids, free laundry services, and free food for the general public. More than 40 families washed 3,430 pounds of laundry in just three hours.

The LaundryCares Foundation salutes these generous business owners in their endeavors to help make the world a better place one laundromat at a time by advancing the mission of LaundryCares to provide clean clothes and literacy programs to families across the nation.
